How the Internship Works

Step 1 · Apply
Submit your application with your GitHub profile and area of interest. No cover letter needed.
Step 2 · Get Selected
Selected contributors are onboarded into the cohort workspace, matched with a project, and assigned a mentor.
Step 3 · Contribute
Fork repos, pick issues, submit PRs. Every merged contribution earns you XP on the public leaderboard.
Step 4 · Get Reviewed
Your mentor reviews your code each week. You get feedback, iterate, and level up your skills.
Step 5 · Graduate
Complete the 12-week program, hit the contribution threshold, and receive your verified certificate.

Is the ECSoC open source internship paid?

Top contributors earn cash rewards and exclusive swag based on their XP ranking at the end of the program. It is not a fixed monthly stipend but a performance-based reward.

Who is eligible for the open source internship?

Any student or early-career developer can apply. We accept undergraduates, graduates, bootcamp alumni, and self-taught developers globally.

I have never contributed to open source before. Can I still apply?

Absolutely. ECSoC is beginner-friendly. We have a dedicated onboarding sprint and resources to help you make your first pull request confidently.

How long is the open source internship?

The Summer of Code program runs for 12 weeks from June to September. You can start contributing from day one of the cohort.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes. All active contributors who meet the minimum contribution threshold receive an ECSoC verified certificate that you can share on LinkedIn.
